Short Story Published Today

My short story, The Curse of Being Pretty, is available today in Liquid Imagination's Issue #5. They accompany each story with artwork, and I'm thrilled with the pictures they chose for mine. Not only can you read the story, but they also have it in available in audio file, so you can listen to it if you prefer. Please make sure to read the other stories, too.

Absolute Write Poetry Contest

Absolute Write, an amazing writer's forum that anyone serious about writing should join, held a winter-themed poetry contest. My poem came in second place, and I thought I'd post it here for any of my followers who are not members of AW to read. But really, if you are a writer and not a member of Absolute Write, what are you waiting for?

Cold in Your Heaven

I linger in a doorway,
half in snowmelt,
half in shadow,
breathing in ice
and cruelty.

You pass by,
shopping bags
slapping against legs,
boots crushing snowflakes
into oblivion.

Give me your coffee,
your coin,
or a look in the eye;
give me your trash,
your condescendence,
or a hint of your warmth.

I am you -
stripped of your plaster walls,
oil heat,
gas receipts and credit cards,
and I am me -
stripped of everything
that makes me real.

The End

I just typed the words 'The End' on the first draft of my WIP, and as always, I am overcome with a curious post-WIP feeling. It is a mix of happiness, accomplishment, sadness, and loss.

The happiness and accomplishment are self-explanatory, but closing the door on characters who have been so vivid in my mind for some time brings forth the sadness and loss.

I get a similar feeling when I finish reading a great book. Sure, I can reread the book a hundred times, but the feeling I get when I reach the end will never be the same.

I'll reopen the WIP in a month or so, read it, and start the first round of edits, but for now, the characters are tucked away as snug as a bug in a rug. When I do reopen it, I'll be in editor mode; even when I finish the final round of edits, this feeling will not return.

At least not until I finish the first draft of the next tale.

Short Story Published Today

My non-horror (Yes, I also write things that don't go bump in the night.) short story, Maybe Kind of Magic, appears today in Crash on page 71 of their inaugural issue.

At the end of the month, another short story, The Curse of Being Pretty, will be available online in a different 'zine, and yes, that one is horror.

Updates, Poetry, and Short Stories

Yes, boys and girls, I know I've not updated my blog in a bit, however, I've good reason. Now that the holidays are over, I am back to my self-imposed 2k a day word limit. Since 12/28, I've only not met that goal on two separate days. No, I wasn't slacking - I managed 1,300 and 1,600 both days.

I anticipate that my blog posts for the next few weeks will be sporadic as I'm pushing to have the first draft of my WIP done by the end of the month. Actually, that's not true. The story is pushing to be told. I'm just the messenger. This is a story I started last year, then left for a time because the story stalled. I knew it wasn't dead, but while I waited for the MC to begin speaking again, I completed the final edits on my MS, Ink, started two others, and wrote lots of short stories and poetry. Even when I've not set my own deadline, I write every day. It keeps the word machine in my head flowing.

I had a battle of the WIPs toward the end of the year with multiple characters demanding to be finished next, but in the end, my current WIP spoke the loudest, and the break from the story turned out to be a good thing. My goal for this year is to have three first drafts completed, with at least one (the current WIP) edited, beta read, then polished some more.

Driven? Yes. Crazy? Maybe.

Now, before I sign off for the night (I still have 400 words to write before I can go to bed), I have a poem and a short story due to be published online this week; I will make sure to post links when they are available. So far this year, I've had two short stories and two poems accepted.
